CASE Conference 2014: Advancing STEM Education
When: Thursday, February 27, 2014 (snow date: Thursday, March 6, 2014)
Where: Bridgewater State University, Conant Science and Mathematics Center
Time: 2:30 PM (registration until 3:30PM) to 9:00 PM with buffet dinner provided
Cost: $30
Preview of Conference Highlights:
ü Exhibitor demonstrations during registration
ü Two workshop sessions including topics in STEM to STREAM, integrating GREEN technology, teaching ecological concepts using watershed studies, using games and puzzles in connection with mathematics lessons, incorporating green chemistry principles into the lab, utilizing LEGOs to teach DNA and protein synthesis, IPad technology in the classroom, climate change and other STEM related activities.
ü Plenary session by Allison Scheff, Executive Director of STEM and the Governor's STEM Advisory Council at the Department of Higher Education. Ms. Scheff will focus on elements of the STEM Plan that can be implemented at the classroom level and will ask participants to share strategies that they use in the classroom that helps further the goals of STEM Plan 2.0.
ü Keynote address by Julie Huber, PhD, Associate Scientist and Associate Director at the Josephine Bay Paul Center - Marine Biological Laboratory. Dr. Huber is a microbial oceanographer by training and is broadly interested in microbial ecology and understanding how microbial communities establish, function, and evolve in diverse ecosystems. During her address titled, Pushing the Limits: Microbial Life at Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents, we will explore the extreme life on Earth at deep-sea hydrothermal vents using examples from research expeditions around the globe.
