Since we started working with North Atlantic right whale
Wart in 1982 she has been responsible for producing 7 calves, 9 grand calves, and
2 great grand calves. That's 18 total individuals, or 3.7% of the present estimated
population.

Earlier this week the Center for Coastal Studies right whale survey team spotted
 our old friend Wart in Cape Cod Bay.

As you may remember, Wart - a thirty-something right whale - was freed from a life-threatening
entanglement by our whale rescue team in 2010; after a hiatus of three years she
 returned to Cape Cod Bay in January 2013 with a brand new calf, bringing the total
world-wide population of right whales up to 510. Wart's youngster has yet to be 
spotted, but it's not unusual for a yearling to remain in the warmer waters off 
Florida and Georgia in these cold winter months.

What is unusual is that our researchers are no longer able to carry out the work
 necessary to locate and identify the right whales, to monitor their health and 
activity, to raise the alarm if a whale is entangled, and to assess the condition
of the unique Cape Cod Bay ecosystem that keeps the whales coming back in ever greater
numbers every year.

In 2008, the right whale program received enough federal funding to carry out 20
 habitat research cruises throughout the five-month long right whale season. In 
2014, ever deeper cuts to the federal funding have slashed our boat time back to
 just 4 cruises for a season that now lasts at least 6 months. That equates to less
than one cruise per month - one quarter of the time we used to be able to work in
the whale habitat.

The impact of this drastic reduction in boat time has the potential to be devastating
to the 250+ whales (half of the total population) that congregate to feed here in
Cape Cod Bay. How can the current and future health of the right whale as an individual
and as a species be determined without getting out into that environment?
