Details: This will be a 1 mile hike appropriate for all ages. Attendees will learn
about how the land was acquired, the unique vegetation found on site, and some of
the local wildlife dependent on the property for survival.

In 1998 the Town of Orleans voted to adopt the Cape Cod Land Bank. The commitment
to open space preservation was clearly shown as 71 % of Orleans voters supported
 adoption of the Land Bank, the largest plurality on Cape Cod. That same year Orleans
modified its Open Space Committee and turned it into the Open Space/ Land Bank Committee
and reiterated its earlier focus to preserve the waters of Pleasant Bay by acquiring
the Christian Property on Portanimicut Road. This parcel contains a globally rare
Atlantic white cedar Swamp.

Unique to Atlantic white cedar swamps is the larvae of one butterfly, Hessel's Hairstreak
(Mitoura hesseli), which feeds exclusively on Atlantic white cedars. This rare, 
emerald-green butterfly often feeds high in the cedar canopy and is difficult to
 detect. In addition, the few currently existing populations of the state-endangered
Banded Bog Skimmer dragonfly are sometimes found in cedar swamp habitats as well.

Directions: From the intersection of Rt. 28 and Main Street in Orleans, follow MA
Route 28 towards Chatham for 2.5 miles. Turn left onto Quanset Road and veer left
at the Y to stay on Portanimicut Road. Follow Portanimicut Road to the trail head
entrance on left (0.6 miles). Entrance is a small dirt driveway.Look for a white
 Ford Ranger and multiple orange cones.
