Climate Change: Past and Future Effects on Wildlife
with Maine State Climatologist Dr. George Jacobson
Saturday, October 26, 2 p.m.
co-sponsored by the Cape Cod and the Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative (CIRENEW)
How do changes in climate patterns affect animals and plants, particularly here in New England? What are the implications for available habitat, population distribution, and migratory flyways? Maine State Climatologist Dr. George Jacobson will examine the history of long-term climate change and how that influences wildlife on Cape Cod. The earth’s climate has always been in flux and will continue to change in the future. The dynamics of atmospheric and oceanic circulation are driven by many forces, acting at different frequencies, that act in concert. Now, human activities are exerting pressure on these natural systems on a large scale. In this illustrated presentation, Dr. Jacobson will help us understand how scientists draw from the long-term climate record to predict what the future may bring.
George L. Jacobson is Professor Emeritus of Biology, Ecology, and Climate Change at the University of Maine. Since his arrival in Maine in 1979, Dr. Jacobson has been a member of the Climate Change Institute, and he was Director of the Institute for nearly a decade. During the past 30 years, he has served the university and the State of Maine in many ways, including leading a successful campaign to expand greatly the support for research and development activities.

Planning for Climate Change: Testing New Methods for Community Engagement
Tuesday, November 19, 2 p.m.
co-sponsored by the New England Climate Adaptation Project (NECAP)
Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is participating in a study with partners at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Science Impact Collaborative, the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Consensus Building Institute, and The Town of Barnstable Growth Management Department to test an innovative way to help coastal communities understand and prepare for the potential impacts of climate change. The project partners invite you to participate in a role-play simulation workshop that will explore various approaches to decreasing vulnerabilities to climate change threats and gauge community consensus on climate change adaptation strategies.
During this interactive workshop, participants will engage in a mock negotiation about how to deal with flooding risk in a coastal community similar to Cape Cod towns. Participants are given realistic scientific information to help them decide how they might go about addressing potential climate change impacts. Data collected from this workshop will help MIT researchers evaluate the effectiveness of role-play simulations as a tool for educating the public about climate change risks and possible ways of managing them. The results will help Cape Cod to better manage long-term vulnerability to climate change.
