The Solar Salt Industry of Southeastern MA

with Seth Mendell

Seth Mendell asks us to return to the early days of our country’s history, when the coastline of our region provided the salt used to preserve beef, fish and other food items. This was especially true during the Revolutionary War, when commerce with England was cut off. Local saltworks took the water from our coves and harbors, extracted the impurities and ultimately produced the pure salt need to cure food.

Seth Mendell , a Mattapoisett resident, retired professor of history at Avon Old Farms School in Avon, CT and current president of the Mattapoisett Historical Society. Seth jumped into this topic 45 yrs ago when he wrote his Master’s Thesis and created his own salt evaporator. We are grateful that he is willing to share his expertise on a unique and fascinating aspect of Massachusetts’s history.

Friends Meeting: 1:00pm
