invites you to continue the conversation about the State of the Birds in Massachusetts this June
State of the Birds: Recovering the American Oystercatcher
Wednesday, June 5, 1 - 3:30 p.m.
Ten years ago, the American Oystercatchers in the United States was facing pervasive threats from habitat loss, introduced predators and climate change; the species was on the way to becoming endangered. In response to this challenge, Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences brought together partners in coastal conservation from Texas to Maine in an ambitious effort to reverse this shorebird's. Project coordinator Shiloh Shulte will share the remarkable results, and take us on a walk to view oystercatchers on Chatham's Tern Island from the mainland.
$8 M/ $10 NM
State of the Birds: Conservation of Herons and Egrets
Wednesday, June 19, 1 - 3 p.m.
Many of our coastal heron and egret species such as the Snowy Egret and Black-crowned Night-Heron are Red-listed in Mass Audubon's State of the Birds Report, and in need of protection, while other species such as the Great Egret and Great Blue Heron are increasing. Dr. Katharine Parsons, Director of Mass Audubon's Coastal Waterbird Program, will present information on the conservation status of herons and egrets in Massachusetts and lead us on a walk to the Goose Pond for a chance to see foraging wading birds. Dr. Parsons will explore factors that have led to the precarious or robust status of the state's long-legged wading birds.
