Welcome to the Great Park Pursuit


A Massachusetts State Parks Family Adventure!



The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is excited to launch its seventh annual Great Park Pursuit, a summer-long series of free family adventures in Massachusetts state parks. Great Park Pursuit (GPP) Teams will design six (6) personalized Park Pursuit adventures from hundreds of great parks and programs.  Teams will take their own "GPP Squirrel" mascot along, snap a Team photo with mascot and post their adventures online.





Join the Great Park Pursuit, get outdoors and create great memories together!


The 2013 Great Park Pursuit series runs June 21st - August 24th, 2013.

GPP Picks of the Week!

Boston:
Georges Island

This is what it's all about around here, folks.  Catch the ferry to the islands and spend the day grilling, running around and exploring the massive Civil War Fort in all its glory.  You read it right.  But that's not all George's Island has to offer.  Come see the play "Clamalot," a musical parody, on Friday June 28th, (11:35 am & 1:30 pm) as part of the Plays in the Park series, a Kids' theater group that performs IN Fort Warren.  Can't make it?  Sunday, June 30th at 11:30 am check out the Vintage Baseball game and see what the soldiers did to pass the time during the Civil War era.  It's all there, just a short boat trip away. The rocky shoals and scenic shores aren't the only vistas Halibut Point offers to its audience.  Behind the beautiful landscape rests a history of granite mining, an industry close to the heart of New England.  Dig deep with our Interpreter as you explore 400 million years of granite that's woven within the threads of our culture and ecology.  All ages are welcome to explore, rain or shine! When you look up at the trees enveloping you within the forest, what's the first question that comes to your mind?  That's what we thought.  Take a half hour ride outside of Boston to learn exactly how to age trees!  But don't forget their unlikely counterparts.  Any guesses?  Yup, mushrooms invariably aid the birth and rebirth of the forest floor.  Come learn exactly how far back in time you're traveling the next time you visit the forest!  This Saturday, June 29th 9:00 am to 10:30 am.

Snakes of New England and the World!
Sunday, June 30th, come see Snake Rangler Rick Roth present a special program on Snakes!  Just be prepared, you're going to get an up close look at these serpents of the forest.  Cameras will be needed for your group shots!  >From 2:00 to 3:00 pm at the Visitor Center!  Come visit Rick and the Snakes.  They'll be waiting...

Stories and songs help us craft the world around us, guiding our imaginations to better understand our surroundings.  Now it's time to follow the leader!  Come sit with our official storyteller John Porcino as he illuminates the natural world through interactive songs and instrumental participation.  It's all about fun during John Porcino's Story Hour.  Active imaginations are a must!  1:00 to 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 29th!  See you there!

Let the sound of the stream and the trees in the wind surround you at Mount Tom for the Explore Beau Bridge Hike this Saturday on June 29th from 10:00 am to 11:00 am!
