The N.E.E.D. (National Environmental Education Development) Academy, in Truro, is seeking a skilled Teacher-Naturalist for the 2013-14 school year.
The NEED Academy is a small residential environmental education school, located in a retired Coast Guard Station in Truro, Massachusetts. The program serves 5th grade students from 3 school districts. Our total group size each week is less than 30 students. Teaching groups are 8-9 students.
Qualified candidate will have experience in: educating elementary through high school students, residential camping, and facilitating team building. Teacher/Naturalists should have a love of being outdoors in all kinds of weather on the great outer beach of the Cape Cod National Seashore and education or experience in natural history interpretation, marine science, or general ecology.
Successful applicant must have completed a four year degree program and have a valid driver’s license. Current CPR & First Aid certification required.
Typical work week is Monday through Friday and includes overnight hours. Teacher/Naturalists lead 3 hikes/lessons per day for their teaching group. Teachers develop and present experiential lessons based on the MA Education Frameworks & Common Core Standards. Lessons are centered on the local environments (Beach & Dune, Dune Forest, Kettlehole pond, Freshwater Swamps) and history (Pilgrims, Shipwrecks & U.S. Lifesaving Service). Additional classes also include: Nightwalk, Group Dynamics, and Pizza Making.
Staff members are also responsible on a rotating basis for helping with meal preparation and serving, bedtime duties, group supervision during short bus trips to various natural and historical areas of the outer Cape, and the overall care and maintenance of the facility.
This is a school year program. Training begins on September 10, 2013. Final day of work is scheduled to be June 15, 2014. Vacations include, one week off at Thanksgiving, two weeks off at Christmas/New Years and one week off for February Break. (Week of President's Day)
Salary and Benefits: Salary is paid bi-weekly for the entire school year. Private room and board are provided. Health, Life, and Dental Insurance are available. Good food, great views, generally likable kids, and plenty of outdoor exercise are guaranteed.
