*DEEP OCEAN EXPLORATION: TRENCHES*

On Saturday, August 24, from 9:30 a.m. -- 2 p.m., the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution hosts a public event featuring*science talks*
in Redfield Auditorium about the deepest parts of the sea -- the
trenches --and *tours* on the WHOI dock of the /DEEPSEA CHALLENGER/ and
/Nereus/ -- the only vehicles currently able to reach the ocean's
greatest depths. The dock opens at 9:30 a.m. for vehicle tours. The
presentations will be held at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

*About the presentations*: Learn about scientific exploration in the
deepest parts of the sea -- the trenches. Extending from depths of 6,500
meters (~21,000 ft) to 11,000 meters (~36,000 ft), the trenches are a
vast unknown part of our planet. WHOI scientists and engineers are
working together to probe these depths using vehicles capable of
withstanding pressures of 16,000 pounds per square inch. Hear about the
dynamism of the trenches -- earthquakes, volcanoes, and subducting
tectonic plates from *WHOI geologist Dan Lizarralde*, the life forms
found in the trenches from *WHOI biologist Tim Shank*, and the
challenges engineers face when building a vehicle to reach these depths
from *WHOI engineer Andy Bowen*.

The one-hour program will run at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm.
