The first Cape Cod Bird Festival, sponsored by the Cape Cod Bird Club, will be
held Friday, September 13 through Sunday, September 15, 2013 in venues
throughout the Cape.
The major fall migrations of songbirds and shorebirds each year in combination
with weather conditions, the unique “bended arm” shape of Cape Cod and its
juxtaposition to Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket Sound and the Atlantic Ocean help set
the stage for the Cape as an exciting birdwatching destination. South Beach,
Tern Island, South Monomoy, Pochet Island, Bank St. Bogs, Wing Island and
more…. all famed with special and often rare sightings of birds on the move,
make Cape Cod a prime and beautiful location to birdwatch.
Birdwatching is second only to gardening as the most popular hobby in the
United States and it is big business. Fifty million people engage in some form of
birdwatching. They spend approximately forty billion dollars annually. People of
all interest levels enjoy birdwatching, from the person who watches birds at their
backyard bird feeder to those who enjoy local bird walks, to the individual who
travels extensively to view new and different bird species. Seed, suet,
birdfeeders, equipment and bird books are sold in many specialized and general
market stores throughout the Cape.
The Cape Cod Bird Festival headquarters will be at the Cape Codder Resort and
Spa in Hyannis, a convenient and comfortable location, where the Friday opening
reception, Saturday night dinner, workshops and a Vendor Marketplace will be
held, and buses will depart for all trips.
Friday night enjoy a pizza party gathering and view the new documentary Epic
Journeys: Tracking the Migrations of Shorebirds in the Western Hemisphere by
Shawn Carey and Jim Grady (Migration Productions). Shawn and Jim produce
bird/wildlife related multi-media presentations, videos and photo workshops that
have been presented at many natural history events all over the United States.
Each year millions of shorebirds make an amazing round-trip journey between
the Northern and Southern hemisphere. This newest video, “Epic Journeys”
looks at three shorebird species and the challenges they face during each of their
monumental annual migrations.
Following the documentary join the three well-respected experts of our Naturalist
History Panel for a brief introduction to Cape Cod’s natural history. Each expert
will give short introductions to various aspects of Cape Cod's natural history.
After the presentations we will open up the floor for a short session of "questions
and answers".
Anne-Marie Runfalo, Volunteer Program Coordinator, NOAA Stellwagen Bank
National Marine Sanctuary, will present a description of the Sanctuary, birds seen
there and data being collected for a science research project she is coordinating.
Mark Borelli, Ph.D., Coastal Geologist Associate Scientist, and Director, Seafloor
Mapping Program, Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, will introduce us to
facets of our coastal ocean geology.
John Kricher, Ph.D, Professor of Biology, Wheaton College, will highlight birds of
the Cape that we might expect to see.
The keynote speaker at the Saturday night dinner and special guest is Pete
Dunne, an entertaining and distinguished author and ornithologist. An expert
birder, a gifted storyteller and popular public speaker his books include Pete
Dunne’s Essential Field Guide Companion, Pete Dunne on Bird Watching, Tales
of a Low Rent Birder and The Feather Quest. He is the Director of the New
Jersey Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatories and a Founder of the
World Series of Birding. In 2001 he was awarded the Roger Tory Peterson Award
by the American Birding Association. Pete Dunne is leading a trip to South Beach
(sold out) and a workshop on “The Art of Pishing.”
