South Beach,</div><div>Tern Island, South Monomoy, Pochet Island, Bank St. Bogs, Wing Island and</div><div>more…. all famed with special and often rare sightings of birds on the move,</div><div>make Cape Cod a prime and beautiful location to birdwatch.</div><div>Birdwatching is second only to gardening as the most popular hobby in the</div><div>United States and it is big business. Fifty million people engage in some form of</div><div>birdwatching. They spend approximately forty billion dollars annually. People of</div><div>all interest levels enjoy birdwatching, from the person who watches birds at their</div><div>backyard bird feeder to those who enjoy local bird walks, to the individual who</div><div>travels extensively to view new and different bird species. Seed, suet,</div><div>birdfeeders, equipment and bird books are sold in many specialized and general</div><div>market stores throughout the Cape.</div><div>The Cape Cod Bird Festival headquarters will be at the Cape Codder Resort and</div><div>Spa in Hyannis, a convenient and comfortable location, where the Friday opening</div><div>reception, Saturday night dinner, workshops and a Vendor Marketplace will be</div><div>held, and buses will depart for all trips.</div><div>Friday night enjoy a pizza party gathering and view the new documentary Epic</div><div>Journeys: Tracking the Migrations of Shorebirds in the Western Hemisphere by</div><div>Shawn Carey and Jim Grady (Migration Productions). Shawn and Jim produce</div><div>bird/wildlife related multi-media presentations, videos and photo workshops that</div><div>have been presented at many natural history events all over the United States.</div><div>Each year millions of shorebirds make an amazing round-trip journey between</div><div>the Northern and Southern hemisphere. This newest video, “Epic Journeys”</div><div>looks at three shorebird species and the challenges they face during each of their</div><div>monumental annual migrations.</div><div>Following the documentary join the three well-respected experts of our Naturalist</div><div>History Panel for a brief introduction to Cape Cod’s natural history. Each expert</div><div>will give short introductions to various aspects of Cape Cod's natural history.</div><div>After the presentations we will open up the floor for a short session of "questions</div><div>and answers".</div><div>Anne-Marie Runfalo, Volunteer Program Coordinator, NOAA Stellwagen Bank</div><div>National Marine Sanctuary, will present a description of the Sanctuary, birds seen</div><div>there and data being collected for a science research project she is coordinating.</div><div>Mark Borelli, Ph.D., Coastal Geologist Associate Scientist, and Director, Seafloor</div><div>Mapping Program, Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, will introduce us to</div><div>facets of our coastal ocean geology.</div><div>John Kricher, Ph.D, Professor of Biology, Wheaton College, will highlight birds of</div><div>the Cape that we might expect to see.</div><div>The keynote speaker at the Saturday night dinner and special guest is Pete</div><div>Dunne, an entertaining and distinguished author and ornithologist. An expert</div><div>birder, a gifted storyteller and popular public speaker his books include Pete</div><div>Dunne’s Essential Field Guide Companion, Pete Dunne on Bird Watching, Tales</div><div>of a Low Rent Birder and The Feather Quest. He is the Director of the New</div><div>Jersey Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatories and a Founder of the</div><div>World Series of Birding. In 2001 he was awarded the Roger Tory Peterson Award</div><div>by the American Birding Association. Pete Dunne is leading a trip to South Beach</div><div>(sold out) and a workshop on “The Art of Pishing.”</div><div>The Cape Cod Bird Festival features the events noted below.</div><div>Vendor Marketplace on Friday (3:00-6:00 pm) and Saturday (11:00am-6:00pm)</div><div>will be open to the public. Many vendors will have items for sale. Artists will be</div><div>selling their work to include but not limited to bird paintings, bird carvings,</div><div>photographs, wooden bird houses, bird houses made from gourds, jewelry and</div><div>silver. There will be representatives from Leica and Opticron to answer questions</div><div>about optics. Blisscapes will be there to help you landscape for birds. This trip provides an opportunity for Manx,</div><div>Sooty, Cory’s and Great Shearwaters, Wilson’s Storm Petrel, migrating</div><div>phalaropes and the possibility of 3 species of jaegers.
