Hello,
I am writing to invite you to celebrate World Oceans Day with us on June
8 with an exciting evening commemorating the 50^th anniversary of the
publication of Rachel Carson's /Silent Spring/.The event takes place
June 8 from 5:00pm -- 7:30pm in the Hannaford Auditorium at USM's
Abromson Center (88 Bedford Street in Portland). It will feature
presentations by three leading "Women Pioneers in Ocean Exploration and
Advocacy": Anne Doubilet, an underwater photographer for National
Geographic; Dr. Nancy Knowlton from the Smithsonian Institution's
Natural History Museum in Washington, DC; and Dr. Susan Shaw, director
of the Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI) in BlueHill,
Maine. All three women will give inspiration talks about their work and
their careers.Please contact Theresa, listed below, for a flyer with
more detailed biographical information.
The event begins at 5:00 pm with a wine and cheese reception with cash
bar in the Abromson lobby where an art exhibit on ocean and coastal
ecology by students from seven local high schools will be on display.
Please bring your family, friends, students, and colleagues, and join us
in honoring the work of Rachel Carson and other women who, inspired by
her example, have made careers and significant contributions to the
field of ocean exploration and advocacy.
