Research Coffee House Series at Waquoit Bay Reserve continues with "Cape Cod Storm Chasers"

On Thursday, March 29, at 7:00 pm, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve's Community Coffee House Series: Research at the Reserve continues with "Cape Cod Storm Chasers."  The featured speaker will be Dr. Chris Weidman, Research Coordinator at Waquoit Bay Reserve.  As Hurricane Irene approached Cape Cod last August , most people were rushing to remove their boats and equipment from coastal waters. But over at Waquoit Bay, Reserve researcher Chris Weidman and a few other scientists were rushing to get their scientific equipment set up in the Bay! Community members are invited to join the Reserve for a local version of Storm Chasers (through some amazing photos) as Chris shares what he found out.

In his capacity as the Research Coordinator at Waquoit Bay Reserve for over twelve years, Chris oversees the research program at the Reserve and coordinates with visiting researchers from other institutions. Previous to this position, Dr. Weidman worked as a Research Associate and Visiting Researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He did Postdoctoral work with NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service in Woods Hole, and has taught at UMASS-Boston, UMASS-Lowell, and Boston College. He earned his PhD in the Oceanography MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography, Department of Marine Geology and Geophysics and  has an undergraduate degree in Water Resources from State University of New York in Oneonta. Chris has also had firsthand experience with the effects of storms in his previous career as a fisherman in Chatham.

This is the last in the spring series of presentations where scientists discuss their research at the Waquoit Bay Reserve. In addition to explaining the research he's doing, Chris will include personal anecdotes on how reserve scientists and partners from other research institutions gathered the scientific data and how he feels their research will make a difference to those sitting in the audience. This series was created to help expose community members to cutting edge science in a relaxed and informal way. The interactive coffee house format helps people feel equally comfortable asking questions and joining in the discussion or just sitting back and listening to the scientists' stories of their work.

Doors open at 6:45 pm with a chance to view the exhibits in the visitor center and sample some homemade sweets and coffee and tea. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mug. Come a little early to get a seat at one of the tables.
