Please let us know if you are interested in bringing your class to Woods Hole this spring for a day of hands-on marine biological, oceanographic and ocean technology activities.
In 2011 over 1300 students from school classes in Massachusetts and Rhode Island participated in our program which includes a scientific 'cruise' on Vineyard Sound. We also lead a walking tour through Woods Hole in which we go in a lab and visit NOAA's Science Aquarium. The cruise includes deploying a benthic sled with an underwater video camera (for a live feed on deck), setting and recovering an instrumented oceanographic mooring using an acoustic release, collecting specimens with a scallop dredge, plankton tows, and other activities. We discuss different technologies, current research topics at WHOI, how and why the marine specimens we collect are used in biomedical research, and potential career paths. Please also check out our site www.zephyrmarine.net
For large classes we divide into two groups. While one is on the boat, the other goes through Woods Hole. Then we swap so everyone gets on the boat.
We hope you can join us in this exciting program. I have attached a brief summary of some of the comments we received in 2011.
Regards,
Robb Reynolds
