On Wednesday, February 8 at 2 pm the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History will
present The February Book Discussion - The Discovery of Jeanne Baret - by
Glynis Ridley. Access to the Museum will be available despite its temporary
closure.
Sue Marcus will facilitate the discussion of this remarkable story set in
1765 on a ship circumnavigating the world. Its purpose: to discover and
collect botanical specimens and to claim lands for France.
Jeanne Baret, an herbalist and mistress of Philibert Commerson, the ship's
naturalist, disguises herself as a man and servant of Commerson, as women
travelling on board ship was an unacceptable practice at the time.
The book provides an excellent picture of the era, information about botany
and the race to accumulate specimens, and the unbelievable account of Jeanne
Baret's experiences aboard an all-male ship.
As the Museum is closed January 1-February 17, borrowing the
book from the Museum Library will be difficult. However, multiple copies are
available in the CLAMS system.
Join us in the Clarence Hay Library for this fascinating discussion.
