Wednesday, February 8 at </span></font>2 pm the Cape Cod Museum of Natural
History will present The February Book Discussion - <i><span style='font-style:
italic'>The Discovery of Jeanne Baret</span></i> - by Glynis Ridley. Access to
the Museum will be available despite its temporary closure.</p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><font size=3
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:12.0pt;line-height:150%'>Sue
Marcus will facilitate the discussion of this remarkable story set in 1765 on a
ship circumnavigating the world. Its purpose: to discover and collect botanical
specimens and to claim lands for </span></font>France. </p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><font size=3
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:12.0pt;line-height:150%'>Jeanne Baret,
an herbalist and mistress of Philibert Commerson, the ship’s naturalist, disguises
herself as a man and servant of Commerson, as women travelling on board ship
was an unacceptable practice at the time.</span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-indent:.5in;line-height:150%'><font size=3
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:12.0pt;line-height:150%'>The book
provides an excellent picture of the era, information about botany and the race
to accumulate specimens, and the unbelievable account of Jeanne Baret’s
experiences aboard an all-male ship.</span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:150%'><font size=3 face="Times New Roman"><span
style='font-size:12.0pt;line-height:150%'> As the Museum is closed
January 1-February 17, borrowing the book from the Museum Library will be
difficult. However, multiple copies are available in the CLAMS system.</span></font></p>
