[SEMCO] 2012 Marine Art Contest for K-12 Now Underway

*Attention Art and Marine Science Teachers, Afterschool Program Leaders, 
and other Formal and Informal Educators!*

Massachusetts Marine Educators announces the 2012 Marine Art Contest for 
grades K-12.  The deadline for submission of entries is April 26.  The 
annual contest's theme is "/Amazing Ocean Creatures of Stellwagen Bank 
National Marine Sanctuary/" with divisions for High School (9-12), 
Middle School (5-8), Elementary School (K-4), Scientific Illustration 
(all grades) and Computer Graphics (all grades).

Entries may be submitted by instructors (no limit on numbers of entries) 
or by individual students.  The contest is free and open to all students.

Contest prizes include cash awards, New England Aquarium passes and 
certificates.  Sponsors of the 2012 competition are:  Massachusetts 
Marine Educators, Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, New England 
Aquarium, Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, Whale and Dolphin 
Conservation Society and Stellwagen Alive.

Each year, winning entries are displayed on the Stellwagen Bank National 
Marine Sanctuary website (visit 
http://stellwagen.noaa.gov/pgallery/contest2011.html to see the 2011 
winners) and become part of a traveling art show (2011 Art Show 
Schedule:  New Bedford Oceanarium until Jan. 13; JFK Federal Building in 
Boston from Jan. 17-Feb. 29; Cape Cod National Seashore Visitor Center 
from Mar. 1-Apr. 2; Salem National Historic Site Visitor Center from 
Apr. 3-Jun.1.

This year students participating in the computer graphics division can 
focus on an alternative theme: "2012:  20th Anniversary of Stellwagen 
Bank National Marine Sanctuary."  Winning entries will be used to 
publicize sanctuary 20th anniversary events throughout the New England 
region.
