Max Holmes to Speak at the Woods Hole Research Center
The Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) will hold a public lecture on Wednesday, April 18 at 6 pm. WHRC Senior Scientist Dr. Max Holmes will present “Going with the Flow: A River-Centric View of Our Changing Planet” at the Center’s Harbourton Auditorium, 149 Woods Hole Road, Falmouth. Reservations are required due to limited parking and seating. To reserve, call 508-444-1521 or email events at whrc.org. WHRC lectures are free and open to the public.
Drawing on examples from around the world, Dr. Holmes will use photographs, video, and maps to show that the health of watersheds can be assessed by monitoring the characteristics of river water. He has studied many of the world’s largest rivers, including the Amazon, Congo, and Kolyma, and much of this work is motivated by his interest in understanding the causes and consequences of global climate change. Dr. Holmes will emphasize the implications of permafrost thaw in the Arctic and deforestation in the tropics.
The mission of the Woods Hole Research Center is to advance scientific discovery and seek science-based solutions for the world’s environmental and economic challenges through research and education on forests, soils, air, and water. WHRC scientists combine analysis of satellite images of the Earth with field studies to measure, model, and map changes in the world’s ecosystems, from the thawing permafrost in the Arctic to the expanding agriculture regions of the tropics.
