Come join us for an informal evening learning about the cutting edge research happening at Waquoit Bay Reserve.
Each week, you'll learn from a different scientist about how they do their research, what they're discovering and how it applies to today's issues. There will be ample time for informal discussion and questions.
We'll serve hot coffee and sweet desserts to complete the coffee house atmosphere.

Thursday, November 3, James Rassman, Stewardship Coordinator, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

It's becoming popular for people to inject their pets with a scannable identification tag to help recover them but did you know we've been tagging the native Eastern Brook trout in the Quashnet and Child's Rivers in a similar manner for several years? Find out what researchers have discovered about the journeys and habits of these celebrated fish.

Thursday, November 10, Chris Maio, PhD candidate in Environmental Science at UMass Boston

After a fierce storm in 2009, 200 ancient tree stumps appeared in the surf at South Cape Beach in Mashpee, providing a wonderful opportunity for Chris Maio's research. He's trying to understand how coastlines respond to sea-level rise, urbanization, and extreme weather events during ancient and historical times.By better understanding how coastal areas have evolved over time, we can better predict future changes. Preliminary results of the Carbon-14 dating to age the stumps will be discussed at this event.

Thursday, November 17, Robinson "Wally" Fulweiler, Associate Director of the Boston University Marine Program

While nitrous oxide is more commonly known as laughing gas - it's really no laughing matter. This gas causes ozone depletion and it has a heat trapping potential over 300 times that of carbon dioxide. Come learn about the role our coastal systems may play in nitrous oxide emissions and find out what Wally is learning from the coring samples she's extracting from the bottom of Waquoit Bay.
