*MITS 2011 Summer Institute for High School Teachers *
*From STEM to Stern: Inquiry-based Science Investigations for High School
Classrooms*
Monday - Friday, July 11th-15th, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm
During a MITS Summer Institute educators at MITS partner institutions work
together to offer a professional development opportunity that combines the
experience of participating in both content and skill development sessions
taught by professional educators, scientists and other content experts.
Daily activities include: sampling trips aboard research vessels,
behind-the-scenes tours of facilities, introductions to resource centers,
participation in simulations, modeling of inquiry-based activities, and
more. Days include a balance of indoor, classroom-based components and
outdoor, field experiences. All the activities are linked to State
Frameworks. Earn PDPs or Graduate credit.
· Explore the science and engineering design behind building and
operation of the Cape Cod Canal.
· Spend a day sampling the waters of Vineyard Sound aboard the R/V
Minuteman and visiting research labs.
· Investigate green technology at the Maritime Academy.
· Learn how to create model ROVs, windmills and other engineering
design projects with your students.
· Explore how to use real time research data with your students.
· Investigate current climate changeresearch and the impacts of
climate change in New England.
· Discover the technology and engineering design concepts used in
building a rehabilitation facility for marine animals.
· Learn how to engage your students in citizen monitoring projects.
· Uncover the technology used in tracking programs of birds, marine
mammals and sea turtles.
*Located at : *The Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Buzzards Bay, MA and the
National Marine Life Center, Buzzards Bay, MA
*Cost: *$275 per individual educator; $225 each per groups of two or more
from the same school/district.
