JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Position Title: Education Coordinator (full-time)
Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
Background:
The Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (Reserve) is a state-federal partnership program established between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the State of Rhode Island's Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) to support the informed management of coastal ecosystems and communities through integrated research, education, training, and stewardship activities. The Narragansett Bay Reserve is located on four islands in the middle of Narragansett Bay and is one of 28 reserves in a national system of protected areas located on each of America's coasts. Reserve headquarters are located on Prudence Island and are only accessible by ferry. Though significant funding and program support come from NOAA, the Reserve is managed locally though RIDEM with a number of partnerships and cooperative agreements. This position is supported through a cooperative agreement with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. Additional information about the Reserve can be found at www.nbnerr.org.
General Duties:
The Education Coordinator (EC) will be responsible for providing leadership in the development, implementation, and coordination of Reserve environmental, marine and estuarine education, outreach, communication and interpretive programs, both on and off Prudence Island. The EC will report directly to the Reserve Manager and oversee the day-to-day operation of the Reserve's Learning Center, and the supervision of seasonal employees and junior staff. The EC will work with other Reserve staff members and lead the development of permanent and temporary interpretive exhibits both within the Learning Center, and throughout the Reserve. The EC will cultivate and maintain productive partnerships and coordinate activities with other education professionals both locally and within the Reserve System. The EC will be responsible for managing budgets, and other general administrative functions of the education program.
Examples of Specific Responsibilities:
* Design, implement and evaluate on- and off-site educational programs and teacher professional development workshops that advance watershed and estuary education
* Provide leadership in identifying regional education and outreach needs and in developing a team strategy with partners to meet those needs
* Develop, support and expand national education initiatives such as curriculum development, coastal climate change impact awareness, and the use of estuary data in the classroom
* Plan, organize and conduct community education and outreach events including, but not limited to beach cleanups, art exhibits, fishing contests and educational festivals
* Create, disseminate and update multimedia outreach products such as newsletters, tide calendars, email notifications, on-line event calendars, web pages, and seasonal signage for informational kiosks at the Reserve
* Oversee and contribute to the design, development, fabrication and installation of permanent and seasonal interpretive exhibits both indoors and outdoors
* Supervise, hire and provide guidance to seasonal employees and junior staff in the education program
* Represent the Reserve at conferences, on relevant education committees, in public speaking engagements and at national, regional and local meetings
* Seek grant funding for Reserve education initiatives as needed.

Qualifications:
Knowledge, skills and capacities
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to effectively communicate to diverse audiences
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs including PowerPoint, (Adobe InDesign desired)
* Knowledge of the ecological communities and associated coastal ecosystems of Southern New England
* Ability to interpret and translate technical scientific research into exhibits and multimedia products designed for the layperson
Education and experience
* A Masters degree in marine or environmental science, environmental education, or related field, or a BS/BA with substantial education experience
* A demonstrated ability to effectively develop, deliver, coordinate, and manage marine, environmental, or science education programs and professional development workshops
* A demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, evaluate, and inspire staff
* A substantial background in marine or environmental sciences, and education
* Successful experience in managing budgets and following administrative procedures of agencies or other large organizations
* Successful experience in bringing diverse interest groups and people together for constructive dialog leading to fruitful collaboration
* A demonstrated ability to productively interact with the public, NGOs, or other stakeholders
* A demonstrated ability to work effectively with agency researchers and the academic scientific community
* Experience in delivering both field and laboratory-based science education programs
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* A demonstrated ability to effectively procure funding to implement education programs through competitive grants, partnerships, or other means
* Experience with website design and development,
* Experience handling small boats and vessels,
* Familiarity with the Ocean, Estuary and Climate Literacy Principles and Concepts
Salary Range:
Salary is commensurate with experience and includes a full benefits package.
