The Art, Science and Politics of Horseshoe Crabs:
Talk by Dr. Dan Gibson of Worcester Polytechnic Institution and
Exhibition of the " Ancient Mariner" Art Collection by Chatham Artist,
Louise Russell
Saturday, April 16, 5:30 p.m.
At the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
The horseshoe crab, a creature more than 400 million years old, has been
exploited for fertilizer and bait and vilified as predators of
shellfish. Despite the discovery of their importance for medical
treatment and as a food source for migrating birds, horseshoe crab
populations decline. Dr. Dan Gibson will elucidate this sometimes
sordid, sometimes hopeful history in a presentation April 16, 5:30 p.m.
at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The event is free and open to
the public.
Also chronicling the evolution of the history and politics related to
horseshoe crabs is the art exhibit the "Ancient Mariner" by Chatham
artist Louise Russell. In 1995, Russell created this series of drawings
and montages to tell the story of Limulus polyphemus and her art work
has created awareness and attention to this living fossil. Since its
creation, the "Ancient Mariner" exhibit has travelled to schools,
libraries, environmental centers and galleries and has been used for
lectures, forums and conferences.
Prints of some of the individual pieces of art will also be available
for sale and proceeds will benefit the Horseshoe Crab Conservation
Association, of which Louise and Dan are both members.
Please call the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary at 508-349-2615 for
more information.
