Scenes from the BP Gulf Oil Disaster: A Photo-Video Perspective by
photographer Shawn Carey
Free presentation open to the Public
Saturday, October 2, 1:30 p.m.
Hosted by Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
South Wellfleet, MA. -While the BP oil spill in the Gulf is thousands of
miles away from the Cape Cod shoreline, "our birds" are currently on
migration and the Gulf Coast is on the route for many of the species.
Concerns over how the spill will affect these migrants, as well as the
effects it has had on resident populations of birds and wildlife in the
Gulf, prompted Massachusetts wildlife photographer Shawn Carey to travel
to Louisiana this summer in an effort to photo-document the largest oil
spill in United States history-and to raise awareness of the disaster's
impact on birds and wildlife. Shawn Carey will share his images and
story on Saturday, October 2 at 1:30 p.m. at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife
Sanctuary.
During his travels Shawn chartered a boat into Barataria Bay where he
photographed and recorded video of two of the largest Brown Pelican
colonies in Louisiana, as well as the oil soaked shoreline on many of
the small islands in the bay and some of the clean-up efforts that were
taking place. He also chartered an airplane out of Houma, Louisiana over
the marsh to Raccoon Island, another of the large Brown Pelican
colonies, and photo-documented some of the problems facing that island
and the birds which use it. In his presentation Shawn also will share
interviews with a park employee at Grand Isle State Park and the
devastation on a portion of beach that is out of view from the public
but had oil on it for over eight weeks and how this might impact many of
the shorebirds that are migrating south. Finally an interview with a man
that owns a local fish processing business that has laid off most of his
workers and having a hard time staying in business. For additional
information and to see some photos from this trip visit the Migration
