Spring Walks 2010 

Wednesday, April 7th, 6:30 pm - Woodcock Courtship Walk, HCT’s Bank Street Bogs Nature Preserve Join HCT’s Outreach & Stewardship Coordinator Ryan Mann on a search for the unusual courtship dance of the American Woodcock. Bring a flashlight, and waterproof footwear. Walk will continue after sunset. Directions : From Harwich Center, go south on Bank St. Park on the left at the Harbormaster’s Workshop, #203 Bank St. 

Saturday, April 17th, 9:30 am - Nature Walk at D. Isabel Smith Monomoy Conservation Lands Join Naturalist, Connie Boyce, as she interprets this historical upland area with views of the Monomoy River. Directions : From Rt. 39 in East Harwich, take Bay Rd. one mile east. Parking lot is on the right across from Blue Heron Landing. 

Thursday, April 22nd, 10:00 am - Nature Walk at the Bell’s Neck Conservation Area Celebrate Earth Day with naturalist, Mary Metzger, as she looks for signs of spring in the wooded uplands around this herring run area. Directions : From Harwich Center, go west on Great Western Rd. Turn left onto Bell’s Neck Road (dirt). Drive 0.25 mile and park along the shoulder near the trailhead kiosk. 

Thursday, April 22nd, 3:30 pm - Earth Day Walk at Thompson’s Field . Join HCT’s Outreach & Stewardship Coordinator Ryan Mann for a celebratory walk of one of Harwich’s largest parcels of early successional (open field) habitat. Learn about this dynamic system and the work that goes into maintaining one of the fastest disappearing habitat types across Massachusetts. Directions : From Rt. 39, take Chatham Rd. southeast 0.75 mile to a parking area on the left. 

Saturday, April 24th, 10:00 am - Spring Wildflowers at Thompson’s Field 

Join botanist Rich Eldred in search of wildflowers among the grasslands. Directions : From the intersection of Rt. 124 and 39, drive 0.9 mile east. The parking area is on the south side of Rt. 39 

Saturday, May 1st, 10:00 am - A Walk in the Hawksnest Woods with Commentary Join veteran walk leader Irwin Schorr as he interprets the six ponds area. Directions : From Route 6, Exit 11, go west on Spruce Rd. Park on the shoulder of Spruce Rd. near the intersection with Hawksnest Rd. (not marked). 

Saturday May 15th, 9:30 am - N ature Walk in the Island Pond Conservation Lands Join Connie Boyce for a walk through conservation land near Harwich Center. Directions : Park behind Town Hall, 732 Main St. 

Saturday, May 15th, 10:00am - Botanical Walk at the Cedar Spring Herb Farm Discover rare and endangered woodland medicinal plants on the farm’s Vernal Pool & Cedar Swamp Trail with herbalist Donna Wood Eaton. Directions : From Route 6, Exit 10, go north on Rt. 124. Turn right on Long Pond Drive. Cedar Spring Herb Farm is on the right at #159 Long Pond Drive. 

Saturday, May 22nd, 9:30 am - Botanical Walk at HCT’s Coy’s Brooks Woodlands Join botanist, Rich Eldred, for a look at spring wildflowers in this marsh and upland area. Directions : From Harwich Center, go west on Great Western Rd. Turn left onto Lothrop Ave. Parking lot is on the right just past the water tower.

Astronomy Nights at HCT’s Bank Street Bogs Nature Preserve: Join Harwich Harbormaster, Tom Leach, for a telescopic look at the night sky.
