Plovers in the Fast Lane: Banded Bahama Plovers Show up on Cape Cod

Presentation focuses on research related to these endangered birds

South Wellfleet, MA. Birders up and down the East Coast are watching
for color-banded Piping plovers. These "bracelet-wearing" shorebirds
were banded down in the Bahamas this winter as part of research done by
Dr. Cherie Gratto-Trevor of Environment Canada. To date, thirteen banded
plovers have arrived and nested on Cape Cod beaches including locations
in Harwich and Wellfleet.

Why so much interest in these few banded birds? Banding provides
valuable information about their migrations, their patterns of
distribution on wintering grounds versus breeding grounds, mate
selection, and so much more. To explore these interesting topics, Dr.
Gratto-Trevor will be speaking at Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife
Sanctuary on Wednesday, July 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wellfleet Bay
Wildlife Sanctuary.

The talk is held at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and the cost is
$3 for Mass Audubon members, $5 for non-members. For more information
contact the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary at 508-349-2615.
