On Saturday, March 20 at 2 pm the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History will
present biologist Brian Kelly speaking on the Massachusetts Division of
Marine Fisheries' Commercial Sea Sampling in Coastal Massachusetts Waters.
Admission is free.

The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) has a commercial sea
sampling program where biologists accompany day boats in fisheries directed
at lobster, fluke, squid, black sea bass, whiting, scup, spiny dogfish and
other species.

Biologist Brian Kelly has been working with this sea sampling program
aboard commercial vessels for the past ten years, and has a total of 28
years with DMF. He will present a PowerPoint presentation showing
commercial fishing operations, and will explain the at-sea data
collection/monitoring process which DMF utilizes, including information on
fishing practices, fish abundance, fish length frequency, and bycatch of
non-target marine species. Slides will touch upon the dragger (bottom net),
pot, weir, and longline fisheries.
This program will be of great interest to the public concerned with the
economic realities of our local backyard fisheries.

For further information, contact the Museum at 508-896-3867.
