August 5th : Ocean Voice Program
Adults $4, Seniors and Children $3
6:15 - 7 Reception
7 - 8 Talk

Join Dr. Ken Oliveira from UMASS Dartmouth as he discusses his work with the American Eel. Dr. Oliveira describes the American Eel as "an ecologically and commercially important species" possessing "an amazing life history with many unique adaptations" that make it a historically successful species. The American Eel spawns in secret locations within the Sargasso Sea, a process that has never been observed.

In 2008, Dr. Oliveira and his research associate, Dr. Whitney Habel, a develop-mental biologist, successfully hatched American Eels in their laboratories at the University in Dartmouth. This represents a first for scientists long puzzled by the reproductive processes of the animals. While larval eels are found in the Sargasso Sea, adult eels have never been seen there. Dr. Oliveira will discuss the life history and current research of this fascinating fish.

August 9th : Special Lecture Program hosted by the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Office of Campus and Community Sustainability.

Come listen to sustainability advocate, global economist and renowned author John Perkins speak about the most pressing issues of our times: preserving the natural world and shunning the kinds of unchecked capitalism that trades humanitarian and environmental ruin for ruthless financial gain.

Perkins speaks out about the British Petroleum's Gulf oil spill and how it is an indicator of how unsustainable our unrelenting pursuit of oil is today. It is a wakeup call that we are finally hearing because it is close to home, though other people around the globe have experienced similar devastation for the sake of fossil fuel and oil industry profits. Meet John Perkins and hear him speak about how his vision of "a new priority: a sustainable and just economy" can take shape and requires the thoughtful actions of every individual.

Perkins will speak at the Ocean Explorium on August 9 at 7p.m. reception to begin at 6:15p.m. Admission is free, though pre-registration is requested so that maximum number of attendees can be estimated. This event is hosted by the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Office of Campus and Community Sustainability. For more information, and to save your seat, call 508-910-6484.
