Waquoit Bay Reserve Invites Local Author to Share Stories to Celebrate
Estuaries Day
Waquoit Bay Reserve has invited author Todd McLeish to share stories
about his first-person adventures studying estuarine species and other
threatened and endangered wildlife found on Cape Cod. The program on
Thursday, September 24th at 7:00PM will be held in the Reserve's Visitor
Center in celebration of Estuaries Day. Attendees are welcome to bring
his books for signing.
In his two books, Golden Wings & Hairy Toes: Encounters with New
England's Most Imperiled Wildlife and Basking With Humpbacks: Tracking
Marine Life in New England Waters, he recounts time spent with the
biologists who are monitoring and protecting some of the rarest wildlife
in the region, including basking sharks, roseate terns, bay scallops,
leatherback turtles, burying beetles and right whales. Todd will take
participants along on an entertaining first-person journey with
biologists who are studying these creatures to better understand the
complex threats they face. Todd will recount experiences helping harbor
porpoises escape from fishing nets, snorkeling in search of wild bay
scallops, and learning how the blood of horseshoe crabs is used in
medical research. In examining the natural history of these creatures,
Todd also discusses the physics of waves and currents, the geology of
the seabed, the chemistry of sea water, and other natural factors
influencing the lives of New England marine life.
Rhode Island-based writer Todd McLeish has been writing about wildlife
and environmental issues for more than 20 years. While earning degrees
in communications at Ithaca College and Emerson College, he developed a
passion for wildlife, natural history and environmental protection.
Rather than pursue a biology degree, he immersed himself in the natural
world by volunteering to help biologists with their wildlife research
and write about these experiences. He has written more than 100 magazine
and newspaper articles as well as dozens of essays about backyard
wildlife, profiles of biologists and wildlife artists, and numerous
threatened species from piping plovers to northern blazing star. Todd
also works as a science writer and publicist for the University of Rhode
Island. An expert birder, and popular leader of natural history walks,
Todd is an in-demand public speaker about endangered species.
