Workshop to Help Religious Institutions Reduce Energy Use and Costs

Several Cape organizations, both secular and religious (including the
Cape Cod Council of Churches) are coming together to offer a free
practical workshop for religious institutions who would like to

reduce their own energy use and provide information to their community
members to help them meet their energy needs.

The event will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of
Falmouth on Sunday, October 4 from 1-5 pm.

The workshop is targeted at congregational leaders, members of property,
building, and/or environmental action committees, vestry/governing board
or parish council members, or

church members interested in bringing this information back to their
congregations. Speakers from Massachusetts Interfaith Power and Light
and Cape Light Compact will highlight

free and low cost programs particularly appropriate for religious
institutions. Brenda Swain from the Falmouth Service Center will share
information on fuel assistance and other

energy services for members of the community. The event will conclude
with a tour of the host congregation's solar electric panels, followed
by a light supper with an opportunity

to meet other participants.

The workshop arose in part from a research project "Climate as Common
Ground" conducted by Lisa Greber (lisa.greber0001 at umb.edu ), a graduate
student at UMass Boston, who was awarded a NOAA fellowship for this
work. While based at the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research
Reserve, she has interviewed religious leaders and held focus groups
with congregants in the Upper Cape area to learn about their interests
in climate change and environmental issues. As a result of her
interviews, she found leaders requesting a "nuts and bolts" workshop to
help them reduce both their energy bills and their greenhouse gas
emissions. She is glad to work on this event with religious leaders in
this community who have shared these concerns for many years.
