The Town Real Estate & Open Space Committee has asked the Harwich
Conservation Trust to share that town committee's open letter (see below)
opposing Article 12 at the Harwich Special Town Meeting on Thursday, Nov.
12th.
HCT recognizes the need to balance smart growth with natural
resource protection. The HCT Board of Trustees also recognizes the need
for affordable housing in the right places with thorough
planning. However, HCT has concerns similar to the Town Real
Estate & Open Space Committee's concerns about development of the land under
Article 12. Therefore, HCT has decided to share the town committee's open
letter below.

Letter
Please vote "no" on Article 12
The Harwich Real Estate and Open Space Committee is
opposed to the "Home Sweet Home" project on Depot Road. We delivered a letter to
 the Affordable
Housing Committee back in June, explaining our objections. This land is located 
within the Drinking Water Resource
Protection District, and should remain in its natural state to reduce the
pressure on our drinking water. The
town has 3 wells about a mile downflow from this
site.
This land is located within the Comm. of Mass. estimated habitat for rare
wildlife, and a priority habitat for rare species. It is part of a large parcel 
of
un-fragmented land with linkage, and possible further linkage to other
conservation land.
This is exactly the type of land this town has worked so hard, and spent
so much money to preserve. There are plenty of other, more appropriate, sites for
affordable
housing, in Harwich. This committee
has supported affordable housing on other sites, and will work with the
Affordable Housing Committee, whenever the siting is suitable. But this site is 
not, and the land
should be allowed to remain in its natural state.
Please vote no on Article 12. Thank you.
