Learn How to "Water Green" at THIS YEAR'S FINAL
Shrink Your Footprint WORKSHOP
New Bedford - Sponsored by eight local environmental organizations, the
Shrink Your Footprint Series continues at Buttonwood Park Zoo on Saturday,
March 21st from 10 a.m. to noon with "Water Green", the third and final
event in the series. "Water Green" will demonstrate simple ways for people
to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle, thereby reducing their negative
impact on the environment.
"Water Green" will consist of a three-part informational lecture and a
workshop. Sarah Porter from the New Bedford Conservation Commission will
discuss the water cycle and the effects of nutrient input, stormwater,
wastewater, oils and toxins that are introduced to the water cycle. Freda
Lee Nason, Director of Facilities Planning, Design and Construction at the
University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth and chair of the water
sub-committee for the New Bedford Sustainable Task Force will discuss the
dangers and possible solutions for improvement to our waterways and drinking
water. The last speaker, James Ricci, Superintendent of the Water Division
in New Bedford, will provide an overview of the New Bedford water system and
discuss the recent purchase of additional land, the use of conservation
restrictions and the importance of land stewardship to the reservoir. He
will address water treatment and the recent addition of fluoride to the
water supply, as well as issues of lead in the water supply to older houses.
Following the presentations, will be a hands-on workshop in which
participants will work together building rain barrels. There will be
several drawings, and the winners will take home a completed rain barrel.
Items from the sponsoring organizations will also be given away.
In addition to the above speakers, there will be many vendors on hand
displaying their products and answering any questions you may have for them.
The Shrink Your Footprint Series is designed to help people reduce their
negative environmental impact, energy use, water use and expenses through
lectures and workshops. This event will be held in the Main Conference Room
at the Buttonwood Park Zoo, and thanks to the support of the Community
Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts and the Southeastern Environment
Education Alliance (SEEAL), there is no charge to attend. The sponsoring
agencies are: Buttonwood Park Zoo, Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust, Lloyd
Center for the Environment, Massachusetts Audubon Society's Allens Pond
Wildlife Sanctuary, The Coalition for Buzzards Bay, The Marion Institute,
