The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster will be the venue for
gumshoe historian Andrew Buckley's screening of Hit and Run History: The
Columbia Expedition on August 5, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. Please call 508.896.3867
to reserve a seat for the screening at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural
History.
The short documentary film is a pilot, meant to secure full-funding for a
13-episode series on the first American circumnavigation of the globe.
Buckley is the foremost authority on the Columbia Expedition and its
commander, John Kendrick of Orleans. He's been on the trail of this story
since 1995 beginning with research for his novel The Bostoner.
"This is new history," says Buckley. "Except for a handful of experts,
no one really knows the story of the Columbia Expedition. Yet, it had such
a profound and lasting effect on American and world history. Without it,
there would have been no Lewis and Clark - no 'sea to shining sea.'"
Hit and Run History's approach is to get out to the locations where micro
history occurred. They visit the places where historical figures lived and
talk to local historians who give their personal insights. The film crew
also gets involved in the telling of the story, with a focus on the "making
of" the documentary.
Following the screening Buckley will be available for a question and
answer period and signing of his novel, The Bostoner.
This project was awarded three Massachusetts Cultural Council Grants
through the Chatham, Marshfield, and Wareham Cultural Councils.
