Friends of CCMNH monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2008
at 1:00pm, followed by the program,
Longfin Inshore Squid in Nantucket Sound: Biology, Ecology and the Fishery
With Owen Nichols, director of the Marine Fisheries Initiative at the
Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies at 1:30.
Friends members/free, guests/$3
Owen Nichols will discuss the life history and distributional ecology of
longfin inshore squid (Loligo pealeii) with a particular focus on the
species' occurrence in Nantucket Sound. History and present status of the
squid fishery will be discussed, as well as implications of environmental
variations on distribution and abundance of the species. Nichols will
conclude with a brief summary of his current research, which is conducted in
cooperation with local fishermen.
Owen Nichols is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Massachusetts School
of Marine Science and Technology, director of the Marine Fisheries
Initiative at the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies and a former staff
member of the Museum's Education Department (and alumnus of their kid's
programs!)
