Hello all,

The National Shellfisheries Association (NSA, www.shellfish.org
<http://mailcenter3.comcast.net/wmc/v/wm/www.shellfish.org> ), an
international organization of scientists, management officials and members
of the shellfish industry, is holding its annual meeting at the Westin Hotel
in Providence, Rhode Island from Sunday, April 6th to Thursday, April 10th,
and is celebrating 100 years of shellfish! This year, NSA has combined a
number of talks, workshops and presentations into a single 'shellfish
farming day', Tuesday, April 8th, specifically to allow shellfish farmers to
attend and get the most for their time and money.

The morning will include a 'Down on the Farm' session with a dozen
presentations on relevant, applied topics:

Quahogs

* Experimental trials on the nursery culture, overwintering, and
field growout of cultured hard clams in eastern Maine (Brian Beal)

* Progress towards Understanding the Over-Winter Mortality of
Juvenile Mercenaria mercenaria (Chester Zarnoch)

* Field Test of Culture Methods to Reduce Losses of Farmed Northern
Quahogs (Mercenaria mercenaria) to QPX (Quahog Parasite Unknown) (Bill
Walton)

Oysters

* The Hazards of Adopting Untested Technology in Your Commercial
Operation (Andre Mallet)

* Pros and Cons of on-bottom oyster culture vs rack-and-bag (Skid
Rheault)

* Oyster harvest and processing efficiency (Dave Roebuck)

Blue Mussels

* Development and Commercialization of Technology for Open Ocean
Mussel Farming (Rich Langan)

* Initial Investigations into the Potential for Mussel Culture in
the Offshore Waters of Martha's Vineyard (Rick Karney)

Other Hot Topics

* Can we upgrade the FLUPSY for improved performance with reduced
operating costs? (Dale Leavitt)

* The Alaska Shellfish Farming Financial Planning Program (Ray
RaLonde)

* Case studies of field-deployable environmental and biological
monitoring instrumentation for shellfish farms (Dan Cheney)

* Embracing Shellfish Aquaculture Best Management Practices on the
East Coast (Sandy Macfarlane)

The afternoon features an interactive dialog run by the World Wildlife
Foundation (WWF) to establish codes of practice and possibly develop a
certification program. This dialog is part of a national series run by WWF
and is an excellent chance to make sure your voice is heard. Come and speak
up!

Finally, the evening includes a happy hour and scientific poster
presentation, followed by an auction to support student participation in
NSA. It's a great chance to find some interesting shellfish-related items,
support students and meet new folks.

Daily registrations ($150) are available at www.shellfish.org
<http://www.shellfish.org/> , but of course you're welcome to register for
the meeting and see the full slate of talks! If you want to attend the
meeting for more than one day and/or want to stay at the Westin, the blocked
rate for folks attending the meeting ends on March 15th.

Hope to see you there. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact
me!

Bill Walton
