Deep Earth Academy (formerly JOI Learning), The Integrated Ocean Drilling
Program (IODP), and the Consortium for Ocean Leadership are pleased to
announce:

School of Rock 2008
Using Ocean Cores to Explore Past Climate Change
Dates: 6 14 July 2008
Location: IODP¹s Gulf Coast Repository at Texas A&M University
College Station, Texas
Application Deadline: Friday, 4 April
Only 12 spots available

The 2008 School of Rock teacher research experience is scheduled to begin
Sunday, 6 July, 2008 at the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program¹s (IODP) Gulf
Coast Repository at Texas A&M University. What¹s so special about the Gulf
Coast Repository? About 60 miles of ocean cores can be viewed and studied
there!
During School of Rock research experiences, K-12, informal, and
undergraduate educators will have daily opportunities to conduct hands-on
analyses of sediment and hard-rock cores with scientists and technicians
who
specialize in IODP research. This year¹s workshop will focus on how cores
shed light on climate change cycles of the past and will include
investigation of paleoceanography, sedimentology, biostratigraphy; seafloor
spreading, composition and structure of the oceanic crust; and methods for
sampling the subseafloor environment. The workshop also provides educators
with time to brainstorm with each other and our scientists to plan new
classroom activities based on their new knowledge and research.
