There are two seasonal positions available at the Mass. Division of
Marine Fisheries: 

 

1.   Seasonal Contractor - Fisheries Technician

Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries

April 15-September 15, 2008

Salary: Approximately $14/hr.

 

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

 

The seasonal technician will assist MADMF Program personnel with 2 main
projects: PCB sampling and horseshoe crab (hsc) surveys. S/he will
assist other MADMF Program personnel as needed.

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

 

1.	Conducts, under supervision, biological surveys in coastal
waters, including work on beaches and small craft in bays and estuaries.

2.	Operates, with training, small craft as "top person," for
divers. 
3.	Carries out market sampling at horseshoe crab bait dealers 
4.	Records and organizes data, including computer coding and data
entry for computer analysis. 
5.	Performs statistical computations utilizing available
biostatistical software packages as necessary. 
6.	Assists in technical and non-technical writing of reports, and
graphical presentations of data. 
7.	Operates and maintains field equipment including specialized
environmental data recording instruments, sampling gear, and motor
vehicles, including small craft and trailers. 

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 

1.	Knowledge of fisheries biology and management. 
2.	Working knowledge of computer word processing and spreadsheet
software including MSWORD and EXCEL and familiarity with statistical
techniques used in fisheries research and management. 
3.	Familiarity with sampling gear commonly employed in the field of
fisheries science and associated disciplines. 
4.	Knowledge of sampling design and application. 
5.	Ability to identify marine coastal fish and shellfish. 
6.	Ability to compile, analyze, and present data in tabular and
graphical form. 
7.	Ability to speak effectively and prepare written technical
reports, write clearly and concisely. 
8.	Ability to communicate effectively with fishermen, bait dealers,
other scientists, and the public. 
9.	Ability to work outdoors in non-ideal conditions, sometimes in
the middle of the night, and lift up to 50 lbs. 

 

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT AND SUBSTITUTIONS

 

Applicants must have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent
part-time, professional, para-professional or technical experience in
marine biology or fisheries management work.  Substitutions: A
Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in marine or fisheries biology,
marine science, or oceanography may be substituted for the required
experience.

 

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Massachusetts driver's license.

 

 

 

2. The following position is available contingent on funding:
