Free and Open to the Public

 

Saturday, September 6th, 10:00 am:  Special walking tour of a certified
organic cranberry farm

Co-sponsored by the Harwich Conservation Trust, join Leo Cakounes for a
one-hour walk and talk about organic cranberry farming.  Typically, this
tour requires admission, but Leo has donated this special tour in support of

Saturday, September 13th, 10:00 am:  A Walk in the Hawksnest Woods with
Commentary

Join walk leader Irwin Schorr as he interprets the six ponds area of the
state Hawksnest Conservation Lands.

 

Thursday, September 18th, 10:00 am:  More Walk Less Talk at Bell's Neck
Conservation Lands  

Join Pat Sarantis for some gentle exercise along woodland paths with pond
and marsh views.

 

Saturday, September 20th, 10:00 am:  Botanical Walk at Island Pond
Conservation Lands 

Wear shoes that can get wet and join botanist Rich Eldred in the search for
a rare tickseed sunflower.

 

Saturday, September 27th, 10:00 am:  Special walking tour of the Cape Cod
Lavender Farm 

Co-sponsored by the Harwich Conservation Trust and
www.CapeCodLavenderFarm.com, join Cynthia and Matthew Sutphin for a one-hour
walk and talk on their 12-acre farm nestled against 70+ acres of Town and
HCT conservation lands.  Feel free to walk the adjacent town conservation
lands before or after the tour.

 

Saturday, October 4th, 4:00 pm:  Nature Walk at HCT's Coy's Brook Woodlands.


Join walk leader Mary Metzger to look for signs of fall among woodland and
marsh habitats.

 

Sunday, Oct. 12th, 2:00 pm:  Archaeology Walk at D. Isabel Smith Monomoy
River Conservation Lands. Join archaeologist Fred Dunford and walk through
the Lower Cape's last land held by the native Monomoyicks.

 

Monday, October 13th, 9:00 am:  Bird Walk at HCT's Bank Street Bogs Nature
Preserve

Birder Ruth Connaughton will look for migrating birds in this 60-acre
reverting cranberry bog complex.

 

Saturday, October 25th, 9:30 am:  Botanical Walk at the Bell's Neck
Conservation Lands

Join botanist Rich Eldred for a late fall woods walk.

 

Tuesday, November 11th, 10:00 am: More Walk Less Talk in the Island Pond
Conservation Lands

Join Pat Sarantis in a walk for exercise through the town's Island Pond
Conservation Lands.

 

 


Road  Map  to  Trailheads  for  HCT's  Fall  2008  FREE  Guided  Walks


 

 



A.  Bell's Neck Conservation Lands (WALK DATES: Sept. 18 & Oct. 25),
Directions: From Harwich Center, go west on Great Western Rd. Turn left on
to Bell's Neck Rd.  Park on the side of the road between the East and West
Reservoirs. 

 

B.  Organic Cranberry Bog Tour (WALK DATE: Sept. 6), Directions: From the
intersection of Route 124 and Great Western Road, drive west on Great
Western Road.  Turn right onto Old Main St., drive past Lothrop Ave. on your
left, and then turn right into the dirt drive just after the first cranberry
bog appearing on your right. 

 

C.  Coy's Brook Woodlands (WALK DATE: Oct. 4), Directions: From Harwich
Center, drive west on Great Western Road to Lothrop Ave. Turn left on
Lothrop Ave. Parking lot is on the right just south of the water tower and
one house.

 

D.  Cape Cod Lavender Farm Tour (WALK DATE: Sept. 27), Directions: From
Route 6, take Exit 10 south on Rt. 124 for approx. 1 mile. Turn right onto
Weston Woods Road and follow the dirt road to the farm on your left.

 

E.  Meet at Town Hall to access the Island Pond Conservation Lands (WALK
DATES: Sept. 20 & Nov. 11), Directions: Park and meet behind Harwich Town
Hall, 732 Main St., Harwich Center.  We'll walk the bike path west and
follow the dirt trail on the right just past the Island Pond Cemetery.

 

F.  Bank St. Bogs Nature Preserve (WALK DATE: Oct. 13), Directions: From
Harwich Center, drive south on Bank St. and park at the Harbormaster's
Workshop, on the left at #203 Bank Street.

 

G.  Hawksnest State Conservation Area (WALK DATE: Sept. 13), Directions:
Near the Rt. 6 & Exit 11 intersection, follow Spruce Rd west.  Park on the
shoulder of Spruce Rd. near the intersection with Hawksnest Rd. (not
marked).

 

H.  Archeology Walk & Talk, D. Isabel Smith Monomoy River Conservation Lands
(WALK DATE: Oct. 12), Directions: Bay Rd. connects Rt. 39 & Rt. 28. The
parking lot is on the south side of Bay Rd., opposite Blue Heron Lndg.

five not recommended)

Shows will be held in the gymnasium of the Harwich Community Center at 100
