Reserve Invites Those with Waquoit Bay Memories to Tea on May 15

Staff at Waquoit Bay Reserve invite anyone with early memories of the
founding of the Reserve or recollections of life and events on Waquoit
Bay, South Cape Beach, Washburn Island or the Quashnet area to a tea at
the Reserve Visitor Center on May 15 from 2-4 pm. The afternoon of
shared recollections will be sweetened by treats baked by Reserve staff.

This event is planned in celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the
designation of the Reserve as a National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Slated for development in the early 1980's, most of the Reserve lands
were bought by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the urging of what
is now called the Citizens for the Protection of Waquoit Bay, and became
part of the state park system.

There are many people in Falmouth and Mashpee and the surrounding areas
that played big and small parts in the legacy of the preservation of
this area. We'd like to hear their stories, whether they are about the
founding and early days of the Reserve itself or if they illuminate life
on the Bay in an earlier era. It's been hard for us to reach everyone
who might know a bit of the history so we're asking people to help us
spread the word.

This year the Reserve has a series of events planned to celebrate the
twentieth anniversary as a National Estuarine Research Reserve. A
schedule of events can be found on the website,
www.waquoitbayreserve.org <http://www.waquoitbayreserve.org/> , at the
Reserve's Visitor Center and at various other locations around town. For
further information, call 508-457-0495 x108. An RSVP is appreciated but
not required.
