Cape Cod Pathways Walking Weekend

The Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve's

Salt Marsh at South Cape

Friday October 5th,

9:00AM to 11:00AM

1 to 1 1/2 miles

2 hours

Easy Walking

 Leader: Andrew Tweel

South Cape Beach and particularly the salt marsh behind it are spectacular in the fall. Waterfowl and other avian life can be observed against the backdrop of red and gold colors exhibited by the marsh plants. Along the trail, Waquoit Bay Reserve Stewardship Intern, Andrew Tweel, will share his knowledge and love of salt marshes as he details efforts to restore the marsh at South Cape. He will describe the importance of salt marshes and how they function and explain why the restoration work is needed. You will learn about the Reserve's monitoring efforts to document species that utilize the marsh as you are introduced to both native and non-native plants and animals that are found there. Andrew will explain the methods used during a restoration process and possible outcomes for the future.

Bring water, binoculars and questions and be prepared to walk on soft sand and wet surfaces.

Directions: From the Mashpee rotary, take Great Neck Road South for about 2 ½ miles. Stay to the left at the fork, where the road then becomes Great Oak Road. Follow the sign for beaches. Drive past the State Beach parking area on the left and look for the Bayberry Lot on the right hand side of the Road.
