On Thursday, November 15 at 1:00 pm Susan Marcus, a retired librarian, will
lead a discussion of Animal, Vegetable, and Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver
and The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan at the Cape Cod Museum of
Natural History in Brewster. Admission to the Museum is free for program
attendees. 
 
Two experienced authors, Barbara Kingsolver and Michael Pollan, have
published books recently dealing with food, our eating habits and the
environmental impact of our demands. On average, every item of food that we
purchase has traveled at least 1500 miles before we eat it!
 
In Animal, Vegetable, and Miracle, Barbara Kingsolver tells, in her
inimitable style, of her family's adventure of eating only locally-produced
food for a year, and comments on the eating habits of Americans. "No matter
what else we do or believe, food remains at the center of every culture.
Ours now runs on empty calories."
 
In the tradition of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, Michael Pollan, with The
Omnivore's Dilemma: a natural history of four meals, contends that we have a
"national eating disorder.".It is a "thoughtful and engrossing" presentation
of the problem and its solutions.
 
Attendees are urged to read at least one of the books -but if that is not
possible, interested people are still urged to come. Copies of the book are
available at the Clarence Hay Library at the Museum and Cape public
libraries. The Brewster Bookstore will give a 10% discount on either book
with a coupon that can be obtained at the front desk of the Museum.
