The Massachusetts Coastal Training Program (Waquoit Bay National
Estuarine Research Reserve) is pleased to present:

Climate Change and Cape Cod: Coastal Impacts and Adaptation Strategies
Workshop

Tuesday, December 4, 2007

8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Cape Cod and Islands Association of Realtors Conference Center, Yarmouth
MA

Workshop Description:

This workshop will enhance understanding about the state of the science
related to global climate change, what impacts can be expected on land,
water and ecological resources in coastal regions like Cape Cod, and
what it means to adapt to a changing climate. As research progresses on
global change, there is an increasing need for communities and local
governments to better understand the environmental, social and economic
dimensions of this issue and how it is connected to planning,
development, conservation, policy-making and management efforts at the
local level. Vulnerability to climate change impacts will be addressed
as well as adaptation strategies that can be applied to help build
community resiliency. Information and resources to support adaptation
planning will also be provided.

This workshop was specifically developed based on audience needs
ascertained from a series of meetings held with municipal officials,
staff and volunteers from many of the towns on the Cape. The meetings
examined climate change/energy related activities and training and
information needs.

Workshop Objectives:

1) Increase understanding about the scientific facts related to climate
change and how this emerging global issue is relevant locally.

2) Increase understanding about how climate change is likely to impact
Cape Cod by examining the region's vulnerability to sea level rise,
extreme weather events and precipitation and temperature changes.

3) Expose decision-makers to information and resources that can help
coastal communities better adapt to climate change.

4) Provide information that will stimulate further inquiry and
discussion on how coastal communities can approach and confront climate
change.

Presenters:

Presenters will include nationally recognized researchers and climate
experts from the Marine Biological Laboratory, the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution, the United States Geological Survey, and the
University of Massachusetts, as well as specialists from the coastal
management community.

Target Audience:

Coastal managers, municipal officials and staff (selectmen, town
administrators, planners, conservation agents and commissioners, water
resource managers, health agents), town board members and environmental
organizations
