The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History will celebrate Maritime Days on Cape
Cod with two major programs: May 12 at 1:00 pm Coastal Waterbirds and May
19 1:00 pm The Cape Cod Stranding Network and the National Marine Life
Center. Both presentations are free with museum admission.
On May 12 at 1:00 pm Coastal Water birds will feature Rebecca J. Harris,
PhD, director of the Massachusetts Audubon Society Coastal Water bird
program at Long pasture Wildlife Sanctuary in Cummaquid, who will speak on
protecting fast vanishing coastal habitats and monitoring techniques for the
endangered Piping Plover and special birds of concern - Least Terns,
American Oystercatchers, Common and Artic Terns. There will also be a
presentation on SEANET, a program of Tufts Center for Conservation
Medicine/Wildlife Clinic, that tracks beached birds along our shores through
researchers and citizen scientist volunteers to identify threats to our
seabird populations.
On May 19 at 1:00 pm Katie Touhey, Executive Director of The Cape Cod
Stranding Network, and Kathy Zagzebski, President of the National Marine
Life Center, will present a joint program on the stranding of marine mammals
and turtles, and the federally-permitted rescue and rehabilitation work
being done with the valuable assistance of trained Cape Cod volunteers. They
will talk about the marine animals you will see in Cape Cod waters, how
strandings occur, and what you should do if you see a seal or turtle on the
beach.
Both Maritime Day presentations will offer hands-on scenarios for the
audience to develop an understanding of what is involved in monitoring and
rescuing our extraordinary marine animals.
