On Wednesday, March 28 from 7:00-9:00 pm the Cape Cod Museum of Natural
History in Brewster will host "Collision Course: Whale Tracks and Ship
Routes," presented by Dr. David Wiley of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine
Sanctuary.
This lecture, the fourth in a six-week lecture series on the critically
endangered North Atlantic Right Whale, is being sponsored by the Whale and
Dolphin Conservation Society (N.A.) and the Stellwagen Bank National Marine
Sanctuary.
A critical seasonal feeding area for right, humpback, fin and minke whales,
the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is also the site of large
commercial shipping routes converging into the Port of Boston. A
conservation effort to move shipping lanes may reduce the risk of ship
strikes to endangered right whales by up to 58% and to all baleen whales by
up to 81%.
The charge per class will be $5.00 for students and members of CCMNH or
WCDS, $6.00 for non-members. Twelve Professional Development Points are
available for educators attending all six programs. Each lecture will be
supplemented by an extra 45 minute session that provides resource materials
and ideas for classroom activities. Fee for all six lectures is $30.00.
For further information, please contact the Cape Cod Museum of Natural
History,
508-896-3867, Ext. 129.
