Cape Cod Sustainability Festival at CCCC Saturday July 28
The Cape Cod Community College Students for Sustainability Club hosts
its first Cape Cod Sustainability Festival Saturday, July 28, 2007 on
the West Barnstable campus. From noon to 5 p.m. the main floor of the
Grossman Commons Building and the courtyard between it and the Lorusso
Applied Technology Building will be filled with informational exhibits
and displays to foster more "green living," according to David Scandurra
of West Barnstable, organizer of the event and a summer student at CCCC.
"We want everyone to come and learn as well as be entertained. The event
is free, but we'd really appreciate any donations made to the Club to
help continue its mission of education and awareness," Scandurra noted.
"We'll have places where people can make a donation."
Organizations with displays and information include: the College's
Environmental Technology Program, GreenCAPE, Clean Power Now, Cape Cod
Grease Fuel Collaborative, The Cape Light Compact, Cotuit Solar, Beech
Tree Art Gallery, Painted Red Naturals boutique (organic beauty
salon/products), Cape & Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative, Waquoit
Bay National Research Reserve, Cape & Islands Self Reliance, and The New
England Green Building Center. By the time the event is held, even more
participants are expected. But it won't be just an event filled with
booths and information tables.
In the business of energy conservation and renewable energy
installations for the past 18 years, Cotuit Solar will be demonstrating
both photovoltaic (PV) and hot-water solar installations. Cape Cod
Grease Fuel Collaborative will have their "grease car" on hand to show
just how well it can run on what was once cooking "fish and chips" on
Cape Cod. Various options for using wind energy will be shown by Clean
Power Now's demonstration turbine.
With plenty of information also comes outstanding entertainment
throughout the afternoon.
"Roots Down Below," can be found at many local festivals and clubs in
the area, and is a regular at Arturo's in Eastham. While still labeled
an "underground band," they've built a very loyal fan base with music
that encourages listeners to evaluate their life styles and habits and
how those choices affect the entire world.
Sara Laketa will perform throughout the afternoon. She is a solo artist
often heard in Boston area and Providence clubs including Alston's
"Harper's Ferry," and Providence's "Tazza Caffe."
The younger set will enjoy face painting, and all are welcome to try
some tasty locally produced organic foods.
