[SEMCO] Woods Hole Diversity Day, August 15

Woods Hole Diversity Day Wednesday, August 15 
from 3:00 - 6:00 pm

All employees, students and postdocs are 
invited to our second Woods Hole Diversity 
Day sponsored by the six major scientific and 
educational institutions of Woods Hole to 
express the importance of understanding and 
promoting diversity.

The events of August 15 will begin at 3:00 pm 
in the Lillie Auditorium in the village. 
There will be two guest speakers. Jamie Hoyte 
with the Kennedy School of Government at 
Harvard will present a talk entitled, 
"Diversity Among Environmental Leaders and 
the Challenge of Environmental Justice" and 
Robert Nadaeu, Regional Coordinator for MEMA 
(Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency) 
Region II will present a talk entitled, 
"Disasters....An Equal Opportunity 
Destroyer?"  There will be a short question 
and answer period afterwards.

A celebratory street fest from 4:30 – 6:00 pm 
on MBL Street in the village will follow the 
discussions. Includes live music by the Pan 
Loco Steel Band, free food, displays, a 
diversity survey, Diversity Day buttons, 
stickers, donations from local businesses, 
and participation from local organizations.

Three years ago the Diversity Initiative was 
formed to encourage the belief that diversity 
is a strength needing development in our 
community. The events of August 15 will 
celebrate the third anniversary of the 
signing of the Memorandum of Understanding 
between the six local institutions (the 
Marine Biological Laboratory, the Northeast 
Fisheries Science Center Woods Hole 
Laboratory, Sea Education Association, the 
United States Geological Survey-Woods Hole, 
the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and 
the Woods Hole Research Center).
