Teacher Training Offered by Waquoit Bay Reserve              Winter and 
Spring  2006   

     «Note different locations!

 

1.  Fish and Fishing by the Numbers        Earn one graduate credit in a 
weekend!

Location: Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen's Association, Chatham, MA, 
and

Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Falmouth, MA

Target audience: Science and math teachers in grades 6 through 10

Credit: One graduate credit or 22.5 PDPs for 12 hours of class time plus 
assignments.

Credit is optional, available through Framingham State College for $55.

Meeting time: Saturday January 21 2006, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and 

                         Sunday, January 22, 2006 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Course description: This two-day course will introduce teachers to 
information and classroom activities about fish and fishing, including 
classification, local fish, dissection, fishing methods, and fisheries 
management. The course content and activities will be aligned with 
Massachusetts state science and math frameworks. 

 

2.  Oceans and Coasts in the Classroom        Two graduate credits; 
offered at WBNERR

Location: Waquoit Bay Reserve, Falmouth, MA

Target audience: Science and math teachers in grades 6-10

Credit: Two graduate credits or 45 PDPs for 18 hours of class time plus 
field trip and assignments. Credit is optional, available through 
Framingham State College for $110.

Meeting time: Six 3-hour sessions, Mondays January 23, 30, February 6, 
13, 27, March 6, 2006 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and field trip on April 30, 2006.

Course description: This course will introduce oceans, coastal systems, 
and methods to teach marine and coastal science. It will include topics 
and lesson ideas most appropriate for teachers of grades 6-10.  Course 
material will be linked to state science, math, and technology 
frameworks. Topics will include habitats, estuaries, currents and 
circulation, oceans and climate, navigation, marine life, and ocean 
technology. Each class will include both math and science activities. 
Participants will receive lesson plans, posters, and CDs, and will 
practice classroom activities.

 

3.  Salt Water Studies                                  One graduate 
credit; offered in New Bedford

Location: ECHO classroom at New Bedford Whaling Museum, 18 Johnny Cake 
Hill, New Bedford

Target audience: teachers in grades 6-10

Credit: One graduate credit or 22.5 PDPs for 12 hours of class time plus 
assignments.

Credit is granted through Framingham State College and costs $55.

Meeting time: Four two-hour sessions 4:00-6:00 PM Wednesdays, March 15, 
22, 29, April 5, 2006 plus field trip Saturday April 8, 2006

Course description: What do your students know about salt water?  
Students are fascinated by the world of water, and we have estuaries, 
bays, and open water in our back yard!  Each of these sessions will 
include information, lessons, math and science activities for students, 
and take-home resources so you can bring salt water studies into your 
classroom.

March 15 Introducing the ocean: world oceans, circulation, bathymetry, 
estuaries

            March 22 Ocean life: classification, plankton, adaptations, 
fish and fisheries

            March 29 Why aren't there whales in Buzzards Bay? Integrated 
biology and history

            April 5 Current local issues and lesson plan presentations

            April 8 Field trip: Local coastal habitats and species

Cost: $60.00 payable at first class to New Bedford Whaling Museum

Co-presented by ECHO Project at New Bedford Whaling Museum and

                             Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
