ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE IN MASSACHUSETTS
The environmental justice movement is starting to develop on Cape Cod.
There's a new emphasis, in some places, on bringing human rights advocates and
environmentalists together to address issues like global warming, energy
policy, and housing.
These are some of the justice-related events scheduled for the near future.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9th: Annual Human Rights Day gathering at Cape Cod
Community College, in Barnstable. Starts at 9:00 am. Sponsored by the
Barnstable County Human Rights Commission.... Everyone is invited.... Local
environmentalists will distribute complete copies of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights. Basic information about energy and human rights will be available.
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 10th: The Sunday service at the Unitarian Universalist
church in Falmouth will be a celebration of Human Rights Day and the awarding
of the Nobel Peace Prize. Nancy Jack Todd, one of the New Alchemy
co-founders, will be the special guest speaker..... She will discuss "Human Rights
and the Environment." Everyone is invited.... The Sunday service begins at
9:30. For information, phone: (508) 457-0449.
MONDAY, JANUARY 1st: Religious and community groups will gather on New
Years Day in Woods Hole to reflect on energy, human rights, and global
warming.... This event will start at 11:00 am at the Woods Hole Community Hall....
Sponsors include the Falmouth Clergy Association and the Sierra Club's Cape
Cod and Islands Group... There will be a collection to help support the work
of the Housing Assistance Corporation..... At noon, the annual New Years Day
walk around Eel Pond will begin. It's a family event with costumes,
noisemakers, and rainbow flags.... Everybody will be welcomed! It's a Woods
Hole tradition.
