Homeowner's "Go Green" When Designing Homes
South Wellfleet and Waquoit, MA-Cape Cod residents have turned their
homes green-but not in honor of Saint Patrick. Instead, these select
homeowners honor the environment by employing environmentally friendly
technology in the design and heating of their houses. In doing so,
they've also made their homes more comfortable, and, as energy costs
soar, they're reaping the economic benefits of their investments by
lower fuel bills. Learn about their experiences on Tuesday, March 29 in
a workshop sponsored as part of Green Home& Business: Focus on Energy,
an educational series for homeowners and small businesses that focuses
on energy in the home and small business.
At 2 p.m. on March 29 at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Orleans
residents Seth Wilkinson and Alison Flynn will tell about the house they
built which includes solar panels for hot water, a masonry stove for
supplemental heating, super insulated foundation, roof shingles made
from recycled tires, and reclaimed lumber. Seth and Alison will share
their impressions of the technology after a year of living with it. And
this winter really put it to the test. "To have 150 degree water heated
by the sun on a 20 degree day in the middle of winter is really
amazing," exclaimed Wilkinson.
East Falmouth residents Bryan Jesienski and Lindsey Close who live in
Alchemy Farm Cohousing, will present later that same day in Waquoit at
the Waquoit Bay Reserve at 7 p.m.. Bryan and Lindsey's highly insulated
home has passive solar design features, a composting toilet, and other
sustainable features. Solar panels heat their home and hot water. They
have installed date loggers in their home to monitor the performance of
their system. Tom Wineman, of Clean Energy Design who designed and
installed the solar system will be on hand to explain how the solar
system works.
The Renewable Energy Trailer will be on site at each of the locations
one half hour before each program. This unique traveling display of
renewable energy is a hands-on approach to learning about the
opportunities and technology available to homeowners and small
businesses. It includes working solar hot water and electric panels as
well as a small residential scale wind turbine.
These workshops are the fourth in the Green Home series sponsored by
four partners: Cape & Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative, Cape and
Islands Self-Reliance, Mass Audubon, and Waquoit Bay National Estuarine
Research Reserve. The series concludes on April 5 with Tom Wineman, a
renewable energy consultant, discussing wind turbines that are made to
power individual homes and businesses.
