      Workshop for Educators:

Why Worry About Fresh Water in a Salty Ocean? -- Changes in Fresh
Water in the North Atlantic and the Impact on Climate Change

Monday, August 22, 2005, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Exhibit Center, Woods Hole, MA

This workshop will focus on the ways that fresh water enters the North
Atlantic ocean, the relationship of freshwater input to the density and
movement of water masses in the Atlantic ocean, and the impact that an
increasing fresh water flow may ultimately have on climate change. The
presenter will be Dr. Fiamma Straneo of the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution's Physical Oceanography Department. Attendees will learn
about Dr. Straneo's current and ongoing research, the types of
measurements she makes and the instruments she uses to make them. In the
afternoon, participants will tour labs involved with this research and
visit the WHOI dock area where ocean instruments are tested.
Participants will receive a resource binder containing background
material, clasroom activities, and links to online resources.

A special lunchtime program will be included with the workshop:

Mary Cook and Diane Stanitski, (authors of the book Teacher at Sea, Miss
Cook's Voyage on the Ronald H. Brown), will provide an overview of the
global ocean observing system and ways that teachers and students can
become involved in populating the ocean with scientific instrumentation
and conducting real ocean research. The authors will make a brief
presentation to the group before lunch and be available for further
discussion during lunch.

This previously advertised presentation has been rescheduled to coincide
with the WHOI Topics in Oceanography workshop.
