Dr. Gordon Sato, Director, Manzanar Project
"Planting Mangroves in Desert Countries, An Economically Feasible Sea
Water Agriculture that can Relieve Regional Poverty and Hunger"

Dr. Gordon Sato obtained his Ph.D. at the California Institute of
Technology in Biophysics in 1955 under Nobel Prize winner Max Delbruek.
He was a professor of Biochemistry at Brandeis University (1958-1969)
and Biology at UC-San Diego (1970-1983). He was director of the W. Alton
Jones Cell Science Center, Lake Placid, NY from 1983 to 1992, and is a
member of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Sato is best known for
his contribution to the understanding of the multiple factors required
for the culture and husbandry of mammalian cells outside the body. More
recently Dr. Sato devotes the bulk of his time as Director of the
Manzanar Project in Eritrea in eastern Africa. The Manzanar Project is
dedicated to alleviating poverty by creating renewable resources in
desert marine tidal zones via planted mangrove trees and re-vitalized
natural and cultured fish populations.
